We would like to greet all who are gathered here today in memory of John. We are currently in Puerto Varas, southern Chile and hope that through these words you will feel our presence at this memorial.
As you may know, we held a service for Dad on the farm in Rupanco. We buried his ashes under a large centenary olivillo tree down by the stream. It was a deeply meaningful ceremony for us all, allowing us to experience some degree of closure.
It is still difficult to fully embrace the thought of him no longer being here among us.
Dad represented different things to different people, for us, his essence was expressed in his presence and through his never-ending kindness.
In a family meeting four weeks prior to his passing away, dad unexpectedly shared some of his feelings. He reflected on his life, he compared it to a journey, a road to the top of a mountain. He said that although he had deviated at times he now felt his journey was almost complete, in a calm voice he told us " if I leave now I want you to know that I will be all right, do not worry for me".
In some way, at a deep level Dad knew his time here was coming to an end, he knew his journey had to continue.
Through dad's passing, we are reminded of our own momentary permanence, our own fragile existence.
In our desire to go beyond our feeling of loss and pain, we find ourselves overtaken by a deep love that transcends space and time. An emotion that allows us to remember that in essence we all come from the same source and are inseparable.
We celebrate Dad's life and Dad's love, and feel privileged to have been able to share it with him.
