John Dustin Locke was born in Hartford, Connecticut on March 15, 1917, the second of three children to Katherine Entress Locke and Dr. H.L.F. Locke, well known pediatrician in the Hartford area.

John attended Noah Webster School in Hartford, Grades 1-5 Kingswood School in West Hartford Grades 6-8, Westminster School, Simsbury, Grades 9-12, and Trinity College, Hartford.

During W.W.II., he worked as head of the Contract Dept at Hamilton Standard, the propeller division of Pratt and Whitney. After the War he worked as an account executive for Chicago and Southern Airlines (later bought by Delta) with HQ in Memphis, TN. Soon he was transferred to New Orleans where he was manager of office of Chicago and Southern Air Lines. Later he moved to Havana, Cuba where he was manager for the Latin America Division of Chicago and Southern Airlines. Now being very fluent in Spanish, he moved to Caracas, Venezuela where he changed into the advertising business and worked for Grant Advertising. A few years later he changed to McCann Erickson Advertising where he remained until his retirement. He lived both in Lima, Peru and Buenos Aires, Argentina where he became the International Vice President for McCann Erickson International. During these years he was a trouble shooter and problem solver for the company. He excelled in human relations and handled international problems with diplomacy and understanding. Many letters and cards were received at his death remembering his character and sincerity.

During this time he also was the International Vice President for the American Association of Chambers of Commerce for all the Andean countries: Bolivia, Peru, Venezuela, Columbia, Chile, Ecuador, and Argentina.

In 1957 he purchased a tract of land along Rupanco Lake in southern Chile and it quickly became the family summer home. He retired to Pompano Beach, FL but spent summers at Rupanco. The photos on the back cover show the rustic beauty of the summer home area that he loved. In January 1999, he suffered a heart attack at Rupanco, and was able to recuperate enough to return to Florida where he died on Feb 3, 1999. His ashes will be sprinkled both in Hartford and Rupanco.
